Joann Blayney, President of Safety Dynamics Group, Inc in Long Beach, has been selected to participate in the 10,000 Small Businesses Initiative being funded by Goldman Sachs and presented through the Community College Districts.   Ms. Blayney was one of only 30 Long Beach area business owners chosen to participate in this program at Long Beach City College.  The Initiative is designed to help established small businesses expand their operations through an in-depth 14 week business management course.  The goal is to promote growth, thereby creating new jobs in our local communities.   Safety Dynamics Group, Inc has provided Safety and Health Training and Consulting services to businesses and the community since 1983.  Their growing focus is on Industrial workplace compliance programs, as well as job-site safety management for construction and refinery clients. 
 
Overview

Long Beach Community College District has partnered with the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses initiative to help small businesses in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan region to grow and create jobs.  The initiative will enable small business owners to access a dynamic combination of coursework, business advising, and other services that will help them grow their firms. Through the support of the Goldman Sachs Foundation, business owners selected to participate in 10,000 Small Businesses with a full scholarship covering tuition and program materials.  Program scholars will:

  • Complete the program with a personalized growth plan tailored to their business.
  • Participate in a 11-session business entrepreneurship training program that examines business fundamentals through the lens of the participants' actual business experiences;
  • Be fully integrated with comprehensive one-on-one business advisory services that help owners to develop and implement tailored growth plans; and
  • Provide access to technical assistance and mentors to help business owners to focus on their most critical business issues and increase capacity.
 
About The Program

10,000 Small Businesses is a national five-year initiative to unlock the growth and job creation potential of small businesses in the U.S. through greater access to business education, financial capital, and business support services.  The initiative is currently active in New York City.  The greater LA metro area is the second part of the country selected to be a part of 10,000 Small Businesses.  Over the five year life of the program, it will reach 10,000 small business owners across the country. 

The program at Long Beach Community College District is comprised of three main components: 

  1. An 80 hour business education,
  2. 6-8 hours per week of business support services, including technical assistance and customized, one-on one business advice, and completing assignments in advance of each class.  These activities will be targeted to directly working on your business and enable you to fully develop your business growth plans.
  3. Expert advice to ready one's business to access capital.   

The ultimate goal of the program is for the participating business owners to increase their revenues and create jobs in the City of Long Beach and its surrounding areas.
